Breath Fresh Latex

Many people ask us what is Breath Fresh Latex. We couldn’t be happier that customers are looking carefully into this key area that comprises such a large percentage of the ultimate quality of the mattress, the comfort, longevity and chemical free lifestyle we support.

For us having the right latex is a simple formula that maintains a few key attributes, that we know from our 39 years of experience are necessary to deliver the quality we will put our name on, and that customers have come to expect from us. We know that having this quality standard separates us and is our way of communicating that when sleeping on a mattress from The Natural Bed Store, it is without compromise and meets the highest quality standard.

Did you know that latex is like cheese, in that how you describe it is critical to understanding what you are really buying. Here is a sample of latex definitions we see out in the marketplace.

Laytex: This play on words means Laytex contains whatever the supplier wants it to contain. An up to date content would be required from the manufacturer.

100% Latex: Most often contains SBR (Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber) is considered 100% latex even though it is from styrene and (read as almost always) usually 70% polyurethane foam, which is made from all the toxic chemicals, we want to avoid.

Natural Latex: Means it contains some natural latex, with the key word being some. It is typical again for almost all latex suppliers to sell product that contains some (usually 30%) natural latex and is then blended with 70% polyurethane, again made using the key toxic chemicals we want to avoid.

100% Natural Latex: There is no escaping what this means. It is 100% all pure natural latex without any blend, it is made using the Dunlop process – This is what we use at The Natural Bed Store

Talalay Latex: – Talalay is always blended with chemicals as part of the process. Typically produced in the 60% natural latex and 40% polyurethane mixture. Again the process uses the chemicals we are trying to avoid.

Organic Latex: For the first time there is an acre or two of rubber trees that have been reviewed to be organic. To reach organic certification takes 3 growing cycles without chemical fertilizers etc. Since the rubber tree has a long life, achieving this certification is very time consuming. A few forward thinking plantation owners are working on this and we applaud their efforts. It will be many more years before more than a couple of acres come online for mattress production. At present there is enough organic latex to produce approximately one organic latex pillow per day. Hence there are no latex mattresses made exclusively from organic latex. If anyone tries to tell different just ask for the certification from the FDA. This certification is freely provided for all agriculturally certified product, regardless of where in the world it is grown.

But why else would you call it Breath Fresh Latex instead of just 100% Natural Latex?

How you make 100% Natural Latex into a mattress core is important, and there are many ways to do this as well. We work directly with the only company that both produces the latex cores and manages and owns the forest the rubber trees are grown in. The forest is the only of only two certified sustainable growth rubber tree plantations in the world and must maintain best and fair practices in the forest management and with their work force.

This means the latex comes straight out of the forest and into a mattress core with out fillers and stabilizers that would otherwise be used to transport the liquid latex, as say in shipment to a US processor.

There is also fine art in the curing washing and molding of the cores. One of the areas that is important to us because we are using these cores for mattresses is how the pinhole pattern is used. We use a pattern which provides for the longest life, emphasizing and using the natural support properties of the latex and not just trying to reduce latex content by using large diameter pins and by the depth or length of the pins to finally achieve our Breath Fresh Latex label.
